1776 and 2012 – Thomas Paine and No Time for Sunshine Patriots

In December 1776, Thomas Paine, the wildly popular political pamphleteer, released the first in his essay series American Crisis. In it he wrote, “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” George Washington liked it so much he had the entire essay read to his Continental soldiers about to fight in the Battle of Trenton.

Now, 236 years later with our National Debt crossing over $15 trillion this past fall, and no end in sight to the trillion plus deficit spending, if we continue down the Obama-Casey Big Government road, we find our nation in crisis, once again. That is why I entered the U.S. Senate race over a year ago: to help stop the Obama-Casey Agenda in its tracks and restore our nation to its Constitutional foundations.

We are just days away from the end of the year 2011, and another critical deadline in the race to replace Bob Casey as the U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. We are a little over $10,000 from meeting a critical fundraising milestone. A contribution right now in any amount, even $25, $50 or $100, will help us meet our goal and continue to get our constitutionally conservative message out across Pennsylvania. December 31st is the last day of the 2011 fundraising period, and it’s the last major deadline before candidates must file nominating petitions to appear on the ballot. Can I count on your support today

In our day, there seems to be a tendency to think we cannot do big things: that perhaps America’s decline is inevitable. I do not believe that. I worked in the United States Senate in the 90’s as a young man during the First Republican Revolution, when such initiatives as welfare reform and real pro-growth tax policies became a reality. By the end of the 90’s, our country was balancing the federal budget and paying down the National Debt.

My Free America Agenda is about doing big things that will help restore our constitutional republic. A balanced budget amendment; a term limit amendment; reducing the tax on work, savings and investment; reining in the Federal Reserve; responsible development of our natural resources; and freeing our country from our self-imposed duty to police the world will do much to allow America to be a bright, shining city on a hill for generations to come.

Thomas Paine wrote in his first American Crisis essay, “Let it be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet and to repulse it.”

Let it be said that 2012 was a pivotal year that restored our constitutional republic, changing the future of this country, thanks to the efforts of patriotic Americans like you!

Please make your best contribution today and help us reach our goal and carry the message of freedom throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year!
